Students create their own Kahoots!😁

Today is exactly 3 months since I departed from the U.S. 😢 .... and Since March I have been using Kahoot! in the classroom on a regular basis (every 7 to 10 days) to revise what has been taught.
Something especial should be done today...
Well, time has come for students to become creators and show their classmates the product of their mastery😃 .
Last week I showed the students how to create a kahoot, and today they actually played what their classmates created.
Some pics below:

The student that created the kahoot was in charge of making it work. We played several kahoot s😉

We used a projector and a laptop to.make it work. Most students played using their cell phones.

In the end ... the never missing "selfie" with some students 😄

Applying what has been learnt 😉

It's more than two months since the TEA program finished but I still remember the great moments experienced in Fairfax.

However, not all the things left by the program are memories.. Thus, I want to share two events that have taken place in my high school this month, as they are directly related to having participated in the program. Not to mention the use of KAHOOT, which I use every 10 days with my students. They love playing it !! and I 've found that it's a great tool to revise content 😁.

EVENT 1- Students exchange between Uruguay and Kazakhstan classrooms😊

After the program all the teachers have been in touch through "whatsapp". Therefore, the idea of planning a class between teachers from different countries grew up.
Ainur (teacher from Kazakhstan) and I decided to plan a lesson together using the webpage www.padlet.com , which we learnt about at George Mason university.
The exchange was about connecting our classrooms at the same time, in order for our students to communicate in real time.
The students had to complete a chart by asking a student from the other country different questions. The level of the students is elementary but they did a great job, communicating in the only language they could... ENGLISH 😀
Padlet.com let the students create "dialogue bubbles" on a board, so they interact at the same time and can join other bubbles if they want to participate in other conversations.

sts used the cell phone and took notes in order to accomplish the task.

EVENT 2- Workshop with teachers about NEWSELA.

Newsela.com is a webpage that allows teachers to create virtual classrooms in order to send texts and activities related to the readings to the students.
But what makes newsela so great is that the students can change the level of difficulty of the reading texts, making it much more individualized.
There are academic texts related to the different school subjects, as well as newspaper articles about a variety of topics. And at the end of each text there is a quiz and a written task for the students to do. All the results are sent to the teacher's account, who is always notified about the level at which each student is viewing the texts and doing the activities.

At the beginning I had to register Pan de Azucat High school in Newsela (necessary to have a teacher's account). As I couldn't do it directly, I e-mailed the support team of the webpage and they immediately solved the problem, which was essential for other teachers in my high school to join as well.

The workshop took place on May 18th and now we (the teachers) are planning different projects which imply the use of Newsela.com.

This is how an article looks like when a student is reading it. At the bottom they can change the.level of the text or click on the "quiz" option to do the quiz.

This is the same article but with a lower difficulty level. As you can see even the title changes...

Books donation from the U.S. embassy

As I was part of the TEA program a great opportunity for my high school appeared...

Some weeks ago I received an email from Veronica Perez Urioste ( person in charge of the education department) telling that I had the possibility of  receiving some books for my high school. So, I devoted some time to write a letter to the US embassy, stating why we should receive them.... and only two weeks later the books were here in Pan de Azucar, great material to work with the students (and what is best...the books have been selected bearing in mind the different students levels😀)

Workshop on "Kahoot"- Liceo Pan de Azucar-

As I mentioned on previous posts Kahoot is great way of engaging the students in the classroom, for it allows them to compete against themselves using technology. And for the teacher it's an excellent way of revising what he/she has been teaching.
How to create a kahoot is very easy, but sometimes we need to be shown, and most importantly, we need to do things by ourselves.... and that's why I commit myself to share what I have been learning during the TEA program with my colleagues here, in Uruguay, with the hope of helping them improving their practices.

Therefore, I decided to do my first workshop in my highschool ... Liceo Prof Alvaro Figueredo (Pan de Azucar) about KAHOOT.
Along the year I want to prepare more workshops for my colleagues...

Below, there are some pictures of the workshop done on Thursday 23th March, 2017 (10 days after my departure from the US :)

A brave Maths teacher showing the Kahoot she created in the workshop 😀

Uruguay...home sweet home

This is my last post... There must be a happy ending.
But first, some acknowledgements:

I want to thank the U.S. embassy in Uruguay, especially Veronica Perez Urioste who was always very patient and concerned about Martina and I before the beginning of the program.
I also wish to thank IREX and especially the staff that welcomed us in Washington D.C. and were in charge of the workshops and seminars we attended there.
And last, but not least, Thank you very much to all the professors at George Mason University, the teachers I met at Westfield High school and of course... My great TEA fellows, who I will remember for ever.

All of them made possible for me to learn a lot about myself, the way I teach and how I can help my colleagues at my high school in Pan de Azucar. From now on, I'm going to do my best to share what I learned with my Uruguayn colleagues!! 😃

And to show you how a happy ending looks like, the following are the first photos I took in Pan de Azucar...

Alexia and Agustin (my kids😁)

Life is not just about people...

Guess which will be the new sport practiced in Uruguay... My son happens to love baseball, haha. These baseball staff was the best thing I purchased in the U.S. (after the projector  of course 😏)

And today I started teaching in my high school again!!  The students are really nice, I talked to them about my experience... And sent these photos of them after accomplishing a task to the TEA fellows.
In the near future I will receive some pics from the fellows' classrooms as well and share them with my students....
And I foresee some interactions with my students and some of the fellows' of course...it's a must !!
😁😁

Monday 13th, Goodbye TEA fellows 😭
